Product Description
Munchkin is a stand-alone card game designed by Steve Jackson that "simulates" (well, sorta') a fantasy-themed RPG (oh, ok, D&D) in a simple, card-based game that's chock full o' silliness. Everyone begins the game as a 1st level Human with NO Class (heh-heh) and via cards, they acquire Races (Elf, Dwarf, etc.), Classes (Thief, Wizard, Cleric, etc.), Items, Armor, Potions and more that they use to combat hideous monsters like the 4th level Undead Horse, the 10th level Net Troll and the 14th Level Unspeakably Awful, Indescribable Horror (very nasty, indeed). The object of the game is to reach Level 10 and levels are acquired via the slaying of monsters and the selling of acquired treasure (1,000 Gold Pieces equals 1 Level). Very silly and a lot of fun!

5 out of 5 stars Not a book a game but WHAT A GAME!   June 4, 2002

...this card game is simple, fun and a riot for any person who has ever played D & D,

In Munchkin you are dealt a hand of cards. Each player starts off as first level, you play items and draw cards, and when you see a monster you fight it, and what monsters, The Potted Pland, the Drooling Slime, the Plutonium Dragon, the stoned Ogre, you get the idea.

You are helped by items such as Don the Horny Helmet, Boots of Butt-Kicking, the singing and dancing sword, but beware, the people you play with might help the monsters to help themselves to your treasure. They may help you instead, for a price that is.

It is very simple, if the strength of your weapons and level combined are higher than the monsters level (enhanced by your foes) you win and get treasure cards and go up a level or you can buy a level for 1000 gold by selling items.

The game is fast paced and very tounge - in - cheek. The maker says it "captures the essence of the dungeon experience...with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff."

Simple, fast paced and full of fun, buy this one...

5 out of 5 stars When being a Munchkin is OK.   June 29, 2005

Fan-freakin'-tastic.

One of the best non-collectible card games I've ever played. And if you're feeling extra saucy, go get the expansion packs. This game is a riot that will have your group (even if not drinking) cracking up. Plus Kovalic's illustrations add to the fun.

Just beware the Magic Missile!

Gamers already know how great Steve Jackson Games are, now the rest of the world just needs to catch on.

As for the low educational value... you won't learn about math and science, but you will learn about orcs and trolls.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Card Game!!   June 17, 2005

This is one of the best card games I have ever played. My friends and I played Munchkins, and Munchkin Bits over Christmas break almost every night. This game is a "spoof" off traditional role playing games with no actually role playing. The cards are funny, very creative and at times making funny references to the traditional role playing games. The rules are very well designed and very easy to follow (not much harder then monopoly). I have played this game with non-gamers and experienced gamers with both groups thoroughly enjoying the game. There are several variants of the game available through sjgames.com (Munchkin Fu, Star Munchkin, and more...) and I would highly recommend this game to gamers of all levels. You can also mix variants together which makes for an even more interesting game. Overall, the game is easier to learn and takes about a couple of hours to play depending on number of people.

5 out of 5 stars A Funny Solid Parody   September 14, 2005

It's about time the Dungeon and Dragons concept of dungeon-crawling, roleplaying, and loot gathering was broken apart into it's most basic components and shorn of it's fluff.

Munchkins is a card game which draws it's basis off the many roleplaying fantasy games that derive their heart from the Dungeon and Dragons system. The game is a complete parody while still providing a solid game play which is both fun and strategic.

Game play is rather simple: Each player begins as a level 1 human. Two decks are placed before you: the first are dungeon cards which contain a variety of different monsters, curses, and random effects; the 2nd is the treasure deck which contains the everimportant loot. You go into a dungeon, look for treasure, fight any monsters you see (you can enlist aid from your fellow players), and take the treasure. And what fantastic treasure it is! Great instruments of power like the "11 foot pole" and the "Kneepads of Allure".

Along the way you can draw cards which allow you to change your race or become other classes such as a thief, warrior, cleric or mage. The goal of the game is to reach level 10.

I found the optimal number of players for this game to be around 4-5. While you can play with 6 people expect the game to be long and that it will drag towards the end as each player closest to winning is bombarded with negative effects in order to prevent a level 10 victory. Gametime typically lasts around 45 minutes to an hour, but it is funny and enjoyable time.

I highly recommend this game for people who have played Dungeons and Dragons and thus can relate very well to the many jokes prevelant throughout the decks.

5 out of 5 stars Lots O' Fun   June 2, 2006

If you have every played D&D, or any other type of role playing game, you'll appreciate this parody. I observed that even people who have never role-played before enjoy this game. The rules are simple, the puns are bad (in a good sort of way,) and the game is just a hoot to play. Make to play with at least three other people. It's much more fun that way.

Check out the expansion decks. I've already played with "The Need for Steed." Unfortunately that expansion pack is not sold by Amazon.
